Aiko Tanaka is a Portland-based botanical illustrator whose work bridges the tradition of scientific plant illustration and contemporary fine art. Trained in both Western botanical illustration and Japanese ink painting, her work carries the precision of a field study and the grace of a Japanese print. Her illustrations have been used in academic publications, private collections, and healthcare environments.
Plants have been teaching us how to see for thousands of years. Every botanical illustrator who came before me was trying to capture something true about a living thing. I try to do the same. The discipline of looking closely before drawing is the whole of the practice.
